The Passing of a Great Cycling Contributor and Friend

12/15/04 - Our good friend and cycling mate Roger Millikan passed away early Monday, December 13, 2004.

Roger's battle against cancer has been courageous. The family is discussing plans for a service and will let everyone know later. The service will most likely be scheduled after the new year.

Much can be said about Roger and his contributions to local cycling. If you would like to send a condolence card their address:
The Millikan Family, 10906 Tolly St., Norwalk, CA 90650-3559.

To honor Roger a ride will leave from Roger and Lynn's House on Saturday, December 18, 2004. The ride will start at 8 AM and go down to Newport Beach and back. See here for more info.

Roger has touched many lives in this community, so please forward this to those that may not have heard of his passing.

12/03/2004 - We have a lot of information to pass, so let's get started!

#1. We have been very busy preparing for the Tour of Murrieta together with I.E.Bikes Racing. As far as I know, this will be the 1st Stage Race in California (Feb, 18-19-20)! This is going to be a HUGE endeavor. There are 3 stages, 9 categories, and $10,000 to award...not to mention the prizes, giveaways, champion jerseys, and the raffle of the Russ Denny road frame. We want to make this stage race fun; this is the main reason why we chose to have the stage race briefing and official results posted at a pizza restaurant...check a placing, have a slice, socialize a bit, talk about the stage completed or the next stage to be won. The race flyer is located HERE or can be personally mailed to you upon request!

#2. Soon it will be the New Year's Day ride in LA and Orange County. As tradition dictates, the New Year's Day ride will start in Long Beach and head South to San Juan Capistrano, then an inland loop to Jamboree to the Newport Back Bay, then North on PCH on the final return to Long Beach. All in all, it will be well attended. If you can make it, then plan on riding...whether you ride 10, 25, 50, or the 100+ miles, it will be fun. If you need time/date/Mapquest, send me an email.

#3. The 21st Annual El Dorado Tuesday Twilight Training Series starts the 1st Tuesday in March and ends the last Tuesday in August. If you don't know by now, the overall winner of the Pro/I-III category will receive an expense-paid trip to Greg Miller's [Sandpiper Bikes, infamous Tour de France/Mavic mechanic!] hotel in Costa Rica for 1 week! ZOINKS!

#4. Time Trialing with CBR! Tren Morris is holding TT at Piru this Sunday, Dec 5. He's also promoting the entire Piru TT races for CBR in 2005! One of the cooler things that he's experimenting with is having a 40K on Saturday and a 20K on Sunday. For more details, check out CBR's website or Uncle Tren's website.

#5. License Renewals! Become a member now and save 20%, because after January 31, the price goes to $30. For Juniors, the price is $10 (17 years & younger). ALSO, only annual members are eligible for our BAR [Best All-around Racer] Series and to receive the state champ jersey at our state championships. For the record, CBR will have over sixty (60) days of racing in 2005! Download the application and send it before the price goes to $30!!

#6. We have 100 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics tickets available(25 tix for FRI nite, 25 tix for SAT morning, 25 tix for SAT nite, & 25 tix for SUN morning) for those that respond to this email with the quantity and time slot of their request. 1st come, 1st serve! Email me if you would like some tickets. Youth groups encouraged to respond! The UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics- ADT Event Center @ The Home Depot Center December 10-11-12. The new ADT Event Center, is a 100,000 square foot, $15 million facility located on the 125-acre Home Depot Center campus in Carson, California. The ADT Event Center is America's only permanent indoor velodrome. Come watch the fast action World Cup Classic in the new ADT Event Center. Friday night, Tour de France legend Greg Lemond will be in attendance for autographs. Saturday, cyclist and speed skater Eric Heiden will be in attendance as well. The 2004 World Cup Classic is a 3 day competition of the best track cyclists in the world. All session passes start at just $60.00. Individual tickets are available for $15.00. Family packs and group tickets are also available. Call Chad at 213-742-7214 for more information or visit HomeDepotCenter.com.

That's all for December. Time is flying; soon, it'll be the racing season! We wish everyone a warm and pleasant holiday season.

11/02/2004 - Last Saturday, we attended the 2005 SCNCA Scheduling meeting. The only people that appeared disgusted at CBR's presence were Lighting Velo (George & Linda Both), Back on Track (Brad House), and Carerra Promotions (Ben Cardenas). The good news is that CBR & SCNCA were flexible and made every reasonable attempt to provide the best racing calendar for the racers in Southern California. Some USCF conflicts could not be resolved: Lightning Velo absolutely REFUSED to change their March 20th date because of the Pomona Valley Stage Race, so Eric Smith (SCNCA President) told them that they might be required to find out-of-district officials at their own expense. George Both said that was ok because Home Depot Center had "DEEP POCKETS." It was unpleasant to see a USCF club like Lightning Velo take such a position against a National Racing Calendar event like the Pomona Valley Stage Race. Maybe Roger Young can give them a class on Sportsmanship. Anyway, onto more pleasant news & events.

Our 2005 CBR Schedule is here! Start blacking out these dates, as we will have solid events with great cash, great prizes, and an overall really good time. Labor Power, Simply Fit/Fuel Up, Clif Bar/Clif Shot, and Monster Energy are returning as CBR's 2005 sponsors, and we've added another one: Greg Miller of Sandpiper Bicycles! He's awarding a free, one-week, expenses-paid trip for the overall winner (& guest) of the 2005 El Dorado Pro/I/II/III to his hotel in COSTA RICA!

CBR's schedule for 2005 looks to be really exciting. We are starting the 2005 racing season with the Tour of Murrieta [info here]! This will be a 3-day stage race with a prizelist of over $10,000!!!! We’ll have $2,500 for the Pro/I/II, $2,250 for the Masters 30+, $2,250 for the Masters 40+, and over $2,500 cash+prizes for the other categories (Masters 50+, Women I-III, Women IV, Cat. III, Cat. IV, Cat. V, & Juniors). If you've been to our races, you know you'll be having a great time at this race. This will be the 1st Stage Race that we've ever done, and we're really excited to be promoting this for I E Bikes Racing.

We're also bringing back the BAR (Best All-around Racer) Series, and it will be (at least) the same or better cash awards! Here's the rest of our 2005 preliminary schedule.

  • The Tour of Murrieta Stage Race (Fri, FEB 18 [TT]; Sat., FEB 19 [RR]; Sun, FEB 20 [Crit])
  • 2nd Annual Ride It Like You Stole It-BAR Series #1 (Sun., MAR 06)
  • 3rd Annual Clif Bar/Clif Shot Crit-BAR Series #2 (Sat., APR 09)
  • 2nd Annual Monster Energy Drink-BAR Series #3 (Sun., MAY 22)
  • CBR State Time Trial Championships (Sun., JUN 19)
  • CBR State Crit Championships-BAR Series #4 (Sun., JUN 26)
  • Labor Power/Mesothel Crit-BAR Series #5 FINALE (Sat., AUG 06)
  • CBR State Team Time Trial Championships (Sun., AUG 21)
  • Long Beach Tuesday Twilight Racing Series at El Dorado Park. Every Tuesday at twilight, 1st Tuesday in March and lasting until the last Tuesday in August!

Lastly, CBR's annual membership licenses are ready for download. The price remains at $25 until January, then a $5 late fee starts in February. By the way, did you know that the USCF is increasing their annual license fee by 20%???? It went from $50 to $60 for 2005. As always, 100% of CBR's annual licenses are boomeranged right back to the local racer via CBR's prizelist. NONE of the corporate officers receive money. Wanna know why? Because all of us have full-time jobs; we do it for the love of the sport. Ernie Sanchez (I E Bikes Racing) said it best when he told me last night that we just want to get together, put on a fun event for the locals and race our bikes....it's pretty simple. If you like what we do and what we stand for, then send in your CBR annual license or make a donation to the non-profit. This email is finally done! See you in December!

10/07/2004 - Now that we are in the off season, it's nice to relax and take a little breather. Please go to TRUESPORT.COM for a write-up on El Dorado circa 1997 [see Bill Stone's section]. The author of the article is David Worthington, aka the Hawkstar, who is a frequent racer, hacker, and overall nemesis to the cycling community and the general public! In his memoirs, 4 racers were in a break...two of them being a 1984 Gold Medalist and a pro racer.

The 2004 El Dorado photos are ready! Ken Brant and Steve Alfano took some amazing pictures of the group. The largest pic is 145MB, so I'll need to mail it to you if you want a copy. Please send me an email [ca_bicycle_racing@earthlink.net], along with your mailing address, if you want the 2004 Eldo group photo.

As some of you know, we are forming a team in 2005. For those that are unaffiliated with a club/team, you should think about joining a cycling team. In bicycle racing, team dynamics play an important part in cycling victories (blocking, leading out, attacking, counter-attacking, bridging, sweeping, etc.). Only in an individual time trial is where team tactics don't matter.

Here are some factors in considering a team:

  • Are there racers who can help advance my goals?
  • Will teammates show up at a race?
  • Can they show me how to race better & smarter?

Next month, we will begin to issue 2005 CBR license renewals. It will cost the same, $25 if you buy it before January 31st. If you wait until February, the same license will cost you $30. This is a 'late fee' because I need to process and issue as many licenses as possible BEFORE the start of the 2005 racing season. Once the season starts, there is very little time for us. With every annual license, you will receive a discount to all of the CBR races...sometimes as much as $7 per race. You will also receive a CBR sticker for the bike as well as your vehicle. ANYONE WHO EARNS A CBR STATE CHAMP JERSEY IN 2005 MUST BE AN ANNUAL LICENSE HOLDER.

Velo Allegro is having their year-end bash in November at the Seal Beach community center. Please visit their website, www.veloallegro.org, and make contact with Robbie if you plan to attend. That's it for October, 2004. See you in November.

09/21/2004 - As our 2004 racing season comes to a close, we're paving the way to an excellent 2005 racing season. While we're not exactly throwing out the baby with the bath water, we will be making changes and as a direct result, the racers will benefit.

Until next month: stay safe and ride hard!

09/14/2004 - CBR's 2004 Season is officially over!

We had a great season this year! Many people came out to support us, and for some strange reason...we actually brought back FUN into bicycle racing! We received many positive & supportive comments on the prizelist/entry fees, the music, and the overall atmosphere of our races. If you can believe it, racers can have fun AND be competitive at the same time.

While it was impossible to satisfy every one of the 2,000+ racers that attended our races, we do listen and change what needs to be changed. As a result of the racer's input, there will be changes coming to 2005. Mainly: CBR State Champions in 2005. Either crit, stage race, RR, or TT, the champs must hold an annual CBR license. If not, then the highest-placed annual member benefits by having won the jersey...which brings me to our next subject-MONEY.

In 2004, we awarded over $21,500 in CASH to racers attending our events. How was this done? Annual licenses AND donations to our non-profit organization, California Bicycle Racing. We returned over $21,500 right back to the local racers. CBR's supply-chain is real simple: licenses and donations turn into cash prizelists.
In 2005, CBR will be bigger and better. For those nay-sayers that pooh-poohed us and thought this concept of grassroots cycling would go nowhere...well, it didn't quite happen. We will continue to grow this sport...ONE RACER AT A TIME!

08/26/2004 - LAST ELDO IS TUESDAY! LAST ELDO IS TUESDAY!

We are finally here. It took us almost six months, and there is only one El Dorado remaining. We are bringing out everything: the DJ, the loudspeakers, the fat kid on the scooter, the camera, and most importantly...the checks!

$1,500 goes to the top-10 in the Pro/I/II/III, and Craig Miller has (pretty much) locked it up. Jason Bausch came hard and fast, so he'll be taking 2nd. Mark Scott appears to have 3rd place wrapped up, and it was it his 1st year at Eldo! Although we have a final Eldo, these finishers represent those who placed consistently throughout the entire year.

While the Pros grab most of the prizelist, we also have $200 for the Masters 40+ and $100 for the Cat. IV/V racers. We're still tabulating the results, but we'll have the top-5 calculated and ready for distribution.

We'll have a few cameras ready for the 2004 El Dorado photo, so bring your skinsuits, pointy helmets, and bow tie...just kidding! Wear normal stuff and we'll be starting early! Try to get there by 6pm!

Our last crit is starting to shape up...if you have not done so, you are still saving the $7 late fee by registering at the active.com website. Friday night's the deadline [11:59pm]. The more that pre-register, the smaller the line....you just present the license, grab the number and off you go! If you're still looking to race this Sunday, please use the below-listed weblink to find your category.

That's it! Stay safe, have fun, and train harder than the guy in front of you! - Chris

08/16/2004 - Only 3 more El Dorados remaining: start time is 6:15 PM.

Can you believe that the season is almost over? Every week we try to bust this out before Monday night, but time escapes us. We'll try again next week!

Thanks for everyone's cooperation between the 3 groups [at El Do]. There's only one referee and three groups, so it's greatly appreciated!

Since the season's almost over, there are some race numbers that have not been returned. Save yourself the $10 fine and return the numbers! We do a complete tally after the year, so please get those numbers in!

Don't forget: the final, end-of-year photo is Tuesday, August 31st. Ideally, we'd like everyone to wear their 2004 team/individual jersey, but who are we to mandate such stuff? We'd be happy if all of you just showed up for the photo!

Our race is 2 weeks away. It's the GO FAST or GO HOME criterium, so you should plan on going fast or going home! For the Women IV, it costs an CBR annual member only $8 to race! For the three categories that are racing for prizes (Cat. V, IV, Masters 40+ IV/V), those CBR annual racers only pay $11 for their race! Is that a great deal or what?! If you have not been to our race, then ask around...our sponsors give us kick-ass prizes! More race info here, or register online at Active.com.

Stay safe, have fun, and train harder than the guy in front of you; otherwise, how are you gonna pass him? - Chris

99 Cents Only Is 99% Wrong

08/05/2004 - The LA Times has a section by Steve Harvey called "Only In L.A." Here's something from August 3rd we thought was real interesting.

Downright spacey: While I was away, Nat Read, Nick Steers and Roger Vaughn were among several readers who wrote to point out that the 99 Cents Only chain seemed to have confused this year's Tour de France with the 1969 Tour de Moon (see accompanying). And, yes, here on Earth, Lance Armstrong has won his specialty six (not nine) times.

The original stuff is here at LATimes.com.

06/13/2004 - Roger Worthington (Labor Power) donates another $1,000 to CBR State Crit Championship!

1. Extra $1,000 in primes for the Masters 40+ and Masters 30+. That's right: we'll be giving away ten-$100 cash primes in addition to the primes we already have ($500 in 30+, $500 in 40+). Roger Worthington, as gracious as he is, gave CBR an extra $1,000 for the state crit championship. Labor Power will do everything they can to make sure they win back that money for Roger, so the question is...are there any other teams out there that can take Roger's money away from him? We're very happy to have the ability to fund grassroots cycling at this level. There are not that many races that give away $100 cash primes, so we are very pleased that Roger is in CBR's corner.

2. Our state crit championship is next Sunday, June 20th. We also have the Voler gift certificates ready to disperse....there's (even) a free jersey to the highest placing Category II racer in the Elite Men. For you Cat. IIs looking to boost your resume for 2005: here's your chance. We also have a Masters 55+ category, so we hope to see those racers participate for the chance to win the state jersey. For those that want to register online, please use this event link to Active.com.

3. BAR/BAT Series Finale: June 20th will be our final BAR/BAT race. This will also be the place for those in contention to be awarded their prizes in the BAR Series. For the BAT (Best All-around Team), we will send a very nice shirt to those racers that assisted in the team's winning. As far as the BAT, it is VERY close! 2 points between the 30+ (Velocity & Labor Power) and 6 points between the 40+ (Taylor Made & Simple Green). In the Elite Men, Velo RPM has the chance to beat Team Monex, but they gotta be tactical about it!

4. Some people are (still) acting stupid, and we hope that a few suspensions will correct the problem. If not, we'll turn it up a few notches. If your hands come off the bike to touch another racer inappropriately, then you won't be racing at our races.

5. El Dorado field sizes: Elite Men (45), Senior IV/V (58), Masters 40+/Women (45). Start time at Eldo is 6:30pm, and we hope to see everyone there. Stay safe, train smart, and work harder than your competition.

-Chris

05/02/2004 - We are into the meat of the racing season! There are only a few announcements, so let's get to them.

1) Greg Miller, owner of Sandpiper Bicycles in Seal Beach & Mavic mechanic for many races including the Tour de France, is happily working at his shop in Seal Beach and has no intention of closing his store. This was a rumor started by some lame-ass competitor. Competition in business makes for a healthy capitalism, but outright lying is dishonorable and weak. For those that are interested, he's got a cool hotel in Costa Rica (www.sandpipercostarica.com), and we plan on visiting it as soon as the racing season is over.

2) I apologize for not updating the BAR/BAT points. I will compile them by the end of this weekend and forward them to our webmaster ASAP.

3) For those that forgot, professional racers from Division I, II, or III teams cannot compete in the CBR Masters categories. If they are hell-bent on winning our stuff, they can detroy their pro license and opt for a Cat. I amateur license!

4) If you're low on cash and want to try to win some of our stuff, then we will need volunteers for our next race, Anger Management Criterium, Part III on May 16th! We have 2-hour blocks (7:30-9:30, 9:30-11:30, 11:30-1:30, 1:30-3:30) for every race you want to do. Check the race flyer to see when you can volunteer.

5) We're bringing back the Masters 45+ category on the hopes that it will be adequately supported. If we have enough support for this cateogry, then we'll have this category for the CBR state criterium championships in June.

That's it for our May CBR Notes. If you have any questions, give me a call at 714-356-1214. -Chris

04/04/2004 - CBR currently has 383 Annual CBR members! We need 117 of you to become annual members. Aren't the emails (alone) worth it?! If we have 500 members, then our cash prizelist is secure for the entire racing season! Membership is only $30 and you send a very strong message to us that you think we're doing a great thing. At CBR, we don't believe in charging $30 for a race where you win a $2 plaque or a waterbottle. When you support CBR with the Annual License, you send a very loud message that you respect our prizes and our cash prizelist. 117 more! If you have a license, then thank you! If your friend doesn't, then nag him/her until they support us! Yay! Get your CBR Membership here.

CBR Stickers are HERE! It took many moons, but they have finally arrived, and they look great! Soon, they will be mailed to all annual members and each of them will receive the 4" (car size) as well as the 1.5"(bike size).

NEXT BAR/BAT SERIES CRITERIUM: The Hansens Energy Drink criterium at the Dominguez Hills course on Sunday-April 18th. We'll also have the extra primes ($10 cash) for the 1st ten laps in ALL of the BAR categories (see below). You can register at Active.com with this link.

See the latest BAR/BAT LEADERS HERE! The race is VERY close, be sure to check the category listings. It's only going to get tighter as we move towards the State Criterium Champs/Finale in June.

If someone wrote a book about your life, would anyone wanna read it?

Have fun! Hope to see everyone on April 18th! -Chris

CBR Image Makeover: Executive Fired, Logo Updated

04/01/2004 - Billed as "Grass Roots Cycling", CBR's image was nice but not good enough to meet membership goals after the first three months of 2004. A consultant was brought in to help define and refine CBR's image and make changes to help it succeed.

Bye Bye LottsThe first change implemented was the firing of Executive Director, Chris Lotts. Consulting head, Tony Moreau, said, "The first and most important step to making over CBR's image was getting rid of that Lotts character. I mean, just look at that picture of him on the scooter. Freakin' eh! That nearly says enough."

Clearly not enough, Moreau continued his explanation of the Lotts firing for about 27 minutes, using colorful charts and language to show how riders' "happiness quotients" would improve 34% after the move.

Vera Grunke, who replaces Lotts as Executive Director, commented, "It's not as tough as you might think to see Chris go. Honestly, I've been hoping for a shake up like this for years. And now, I get to run things my way."

California Bicycle Racing Logo-Joke!In her first move as Executive Director, Grunke implemented the second CBR change resulting from the image consultant's recommendations. "I'm pleased to unveil the very sharp, very new, CBR logo!", Grunke announced.

Basically the old logo with a new mascot, designer Wei Gahn elaborated on the change, "I chose a cartoonish aardvark because it was the first image that popped up in my clip art on Print Shop" Consultant Moreau backed Gahn's aardvark decision as a genius strategic move, saying "Aardvarks are noble animals that do most of their living 'grass roots'. And, once the mascot costume is finished, the CBR mascot will be announced first at all events that announce mascots alphabetically."

Additional changes to CBR, including a rules change to limit bikes to only 7 speed cassettes, are speculated and expected, but no others have yet been announced.

Happy April Fool's Day! -ADM

CBR Racing Update
by Chris Lotts

02/29/2004 - El Dorado starts Tuesday! Start time is 4:45PM until the time change, then it will be 6PM for awhile. Prime and final points awarded for each of the 3 categories, $1,500 goes to the overall top ten in the Pro-Elite. If you want to register online, go to Active.com, or bring cash and get to El Do early. There is a Skills Clinic by Neil Browne of Wenzel Coaching starting at 3:45PM.

Get your CBR Annual License to save money on registration fees for CBR races, El Do, and to support grassroots cycling. It's just $30. Register online at Active.com. CBR needs to sell 227 more licenses to meet the 2004 goal and to guarantee the prizelist for the entire year!

March 21 is our 2nd CBR BAR/BAT Series race, the 2nd Annual Nike Vision Criterium! We are very excited about this race, even though it conflicts with the last day of the Pomona Valley Stage Race (PVSR). If you race PVSR and you end up NOT being in contention for the overall general classification, then come over to Dominguez Hills for some great cash and some great primes, not to mention our wicked cool officials as well as DJ Dave Skott. With Bill Mock and Jim Wiznura busting out the results in less than 10 minutes, you will not be wasting time waiting, waiting, and waiting. As everyone now knows, we are listing the top 20 finishers in each category, with upgrade points going to the top six. More info, including how to register by mail, is in our race flyer. Or register online at Active.com.

Our CBR stickers are almost ready to be shipped! We will have a 4" for your vehicle and a 1.5" sticker for your bike/helmet/pet dog/cat. Get them while you can.

A little-known fact that is about to be well-known:  Roger Worthington, founder of the Labor Power Racing Team and asbestos cancer lawyer has made a generous cash donation to CBR, and 100% of that will be applied to our State Criterium Championship in June! CBR is very fortunate to have someone like Roger who is willing to stand up and be counted in ensuring that CBR survives to promote grassroots cycling: local races for the local racer. As I have always said before, 100% of CBR's cash prizelist comes from 2 sources: annual licenses and donations. We really appreciate Roger's support, and we'll do everything we can to keep CBR going!

That is it until the first El Dorado results. Train harder than your competition and stay safe. -Chris

CBR Racing Update
by Chris Lotts

02/08/2004 - Well, our "Ride It Like You Stole It" race is one week away. Vera peeked at the extended weather forcast, and it looks like we'll have great weather for next Sunday (02/15/04).

The St. Valentine's Day Massacre bike race had few casualties and an impressive turnout. Gordon McCauley was there, as was Evan Teske, The Worthingtons, Suzanne Sonye, Roberto Gaglioli, Team Taylor Made, and many, many others.

I saw Rick Wilson last week, and we'll have the CLIF BAR start/finish chute for our race next Sunday at Dominguez Hills. It's huge! All of the racers will be flying through it/underneath it with every lap.

Another one of our CBR toys came in this week, our Countdown Timer. It's a daylight visible 9" LED display that's made by folks who supply the Olympics with some of their equipment! The timer can be seen from up to 500 feet away and will let all of the racers know how much time remains in their race before lap cards (5 to go!). We had a dry run this weekend and that bad boy is BRIGHT. We think the racers will really like it.

It's important to show the racers that money is being re-invested into the sport.  While CBR funds go to the prizelist, VNC Racing funds are used for things like the countdown Timer...there's little use for it in my home!  The countdown timer will also be brought to El Dorado.

Last year, we replaced all of the racing numbers at El Dorado. This year is the countdown timer. Next year....who knows? Any thoughts?

We hope to see as many of you that can attend our race on the 15th in Dominguez Hills. -Chris
