CBR End-of-2003 Update
by Chris Lotts
12/28/2003 - Happy holidays to all, and here's what's happening...behind the curtain!
1) Al Levi became the first contributor to CBR's non-profit status! Thank you, Al! We found out this past weekend as we're preparing to issue the 2004 licenses. For those of you that sent in your 2004 application, we're sending them out after 01/01/4. Checks won't be cashed until AFTER we issue the licenses.
2) CBR has a new sponsor! Dr. Eric Sternlicht: anatomy, physiology, fitness expert, and author of the book FUEL UP is fully supporting CBR's endeavors for 2004. His book will be at our races, and signed copies will be awarded to top-finishing racers at our criteriums. Visit www.simplyfit.com, where you can take a look at his latest book!
3) CBR's website, CaliforniaBicycleRacing.org, now has all of our race flyers, club information, cycling announcements, and prior results. If there are any changes to anything, then it will be posted on the website first, then announced to the group.
4) For those that want to purchase their 2004 CBR memberships or sign up for El Dorado with a credit card, you can now do so at Active.com,
5) Our goal of 500 members in 2004 can make us completely self-sustaining with permits, staffing, police services, and a larger cash prizelist in our races. The more members we have, the more we can give it back to our CBR loyalists. This is why we made the BAR Series payable only to CBR annual members. Points will only be awarded to those who have an annual license. The daily cash awards go to the top-5 or top-10 (depends on the category). What is the BAR Series? It's four (4) categories within a criterium racing day. Check out the 2003 winners & photos here.
6) If you have not sent your license, please save yourself the LATE FEE! I'm also late with everything, it took me two years to get the t-shirts made! We're working on the stickers, and they'll be on the way! Renewals went out to over 1,200 racers, and we've rec'd 84 responses...some of them (even) positive! Remember: the more members, the more prizes. If you need to download the application, here's the link.
7) 2004 CBR-recognized clubs, as of 12/29/03:
Bella Nova/Fuel Up, Cycles Veloce-Edge, Labor Power, Lightning Velo, MetRx/Alliance Cycling, Red 5 Racing, Taylor Made Racing Team, Team Velocity, and Velo Avanti. Racers placing in CBR races will also have their CBR-recognized teams publicized in all related announcements. Please get your club paperwork into us BEFORE the racing season starts!
8) The racing season is warming up, as Food Park shows us that racers have been doing threshold intervals for many weeks, and thus preparing for their first peaking in February!
9) NEW YEAR'S DAY RIDE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: Starts in Belmont Shore at Bay Shore Ave & 2nd Street at 7:55 AM. The ride picks up a large group of riders as it goes by the Long Beach/Alamitos Bay Marina and turns south from 2nd Street onto PCH at around 8:00 AM. Heads South for miles, tons of people pick it up along the way, and is there actually a better way to recover from a hangover than riding with a bunch of others feeling likewise? Have fun, stay safe, and train harder than your competition! Chris
