HELP SAVE EL DO!

The L.A. County's Dept. of Public Works suggests turning part of the northern section of Long Beach's El Dorado Regional Park (Area 3, north of Wardlow Rd.) into wetlands. The course for Tuesday El Do races will be under water!

UPDATES

02/28/2005 - Report by Steve Hansen, Steve@ParamountRacing.org
Not much happened at [the 02/23] meeting. It was a large turnout but I did not recognize any "bike people". From the Plans A, B and C it does not appear that the Eldo road section next to LB Town Center (the one we use) would be disrupted as far as the course layout. If anything it would be improved as far as pavement surfacing. There could be major disruptions during construction but it really is too early to speculate on that. The bike path along the river would likely get improved a lot. Not completely sure what would happen to the parking lot we use. I think it would likely stay but the parking fees could be increased. Right now this project is at least 5 years away. It is just in the feasibility stages now and they need to find some state or federal money to fund this project which will cost many millions. The primary emphasis is improving the water quality of the duck ponds (how about removing the ducks! :-D ) and to stop spending money on filling them with drinking water. One other point is that this is a City potential project and not a county project. The county has its own feasibility study and master plan here for river areas up stream of Eldo. I dont think the city has anything on its website yet but claims it will be putting something up. The main LB city contact for this plan/project is Ms. Anna Mendiola , City of Long Beach Park Development Officer at (562) 570-3165; Anna_Mendiola@longbeach.gov; I suggest getting on her mailing list (email?) for updates. Next meeting is 4/27/05.
